Headlokt FAQ: Your Questions, Answered

Explore the comprehensive list of frequently asked questions about Headlokt helmets, safety features, and helmet maintenance. Find the information you need to make the most out of your cycling experience with Headlokt.

Q: DO I NEED A KEY FOR THE LOCK?

A: Nope. The lock is a three-dial combination lock, so you never have to worry about losing your key. Just remember the combination and you’re good to go... leave your bike safe and sound. Our instructions are included with every helmet and show you how to set the combination lock to a personal code.

Q: HOW STRONG IS THE LOCK?

A:Strong enough that it's a deterrent, when in use, from an opportunist taking your bike, scooter or skateboard and your Headlokt helmet! The locking device cord is stainless steel coated in plastic, for extra smoothness and easy use.

Q: HOW DO I WORK THE LOCK?

A: It's really simple and designed for all ages. We wanted it to be easy for everyone to use on the go. We have full instructions with each helmet on all you need to do. Once your combination code is set, you're away!

You simply press and hold the arrow button on the helmet to release the cord, pull it out and once you have threaded it through your bike / scooter etc., and the object you are locking it to - the cord will neatly click into the receiving hole on the helmet. Mix up the combination code and your Headlokt is locked!

To unlock the helmet, simply set the combination code to your personal code and press the padlock button to release the cord. Whilst holding on to the cord it will retract into the lock housing neatly inside the helmet. Put your Headlokt helmet on your head and off you go again!

You can read our full instructions here, or watch the short videos below showing how the lock works:

Q: DOES THE LOCK MAKE THE HELMET HEAVY?

A: We have worked really hard to keep the lock as integrated as possible and it is a lightweight design. And we’ve been able to get it down to only adding an extra 97 grams. That’s equivalent to the weight of a kiwi fruit. Strap one to your current helmet and see if you think it holds you back too much! :)

Q: HOW DO I KNOW WHAT SIZE HEADLOKT HELMET IS RIGHT FOR ME?

A: That's a great question. We have you covered! See here for how to measure the circumference of your head. It's simple. Then you can match up your head circumference measurement with the best sized Headlokt helmet:

 Small Helmets fit heads  53 - 55cm or 20 - 21.7in.

Medium Helmets fit heads  55 -58cm or  21.7 - 22.9in.

Large Helmets fit heads  58 - 61cm or 22.9 - 24in.

In addition to the different sized helmets, Headlokt helmets come with adjustable straps and a adjusting dial on the rear of the helmet to accommodate various head shapes and sizes, ensuring a secure and comfortable fit for everyone.

Q: WHY HAS IT TAKEN SO LONG FOR A HELMET TO ALSO BE A LOCK?

A: Sometimes the best ideas seem so obvious. Without going through the world's longest lockdown and getting out on the bikes with her kids, perhaps our founder Lisa would never have thought of it!

Q: WHAT COLOURS IS HEADLOKT AVAILABLE IN?

A: It’s available in every colour, as long as you like black or white. In fact its Headlokt Black and Headlokt White. We have plans for more colours in the future, but for now we’ve kept it simple.

Q: WHAT SAFETY STANDARDS HAS IT PASSED?

A: All of them (ANZ, US and EU) - which we're pretty proud about as it's no small feat! In fact the actual safety standards, by region, Headlokt is approved for are:

ASNZS 2063:2008 Bicycle Helmets and ASNZS 2063:2020 Helmets for use on bicycles and wheeled recreation devices for Australia and New Zealand.

CPSC16CFR1203 safety standard for bicycle helmets for USA.

EN1078:2012+A1:2012 Helmets for pedal cyclists and for users of skateboards and roller skates for Europe / EU Countries and the UK.

(NB You should ensure you purchase the correct helmet approved for your region. The A/NZ Helmet is the first to be released and available for order now - the EU and USA helmets will be available later in the year - Please sign up for emails and we will keep you updated!)

Amongst many of requirements, Headlokt uses thick EPS foam liner throughout the entire helmet, including the lock. So it's ready to keep the important stuff safe. Like your head. Your children. Your friends. But also to help keep your bike safe!

Q: IT LOOKS SO GOOD! WHO DESIGNED IT?

A: Aww shucks, thanks! We think it looks pretty stylish too. There have been lots of people involved across manufacturing, lock specification and a long list of other requirements. We also worked with an award-winning Australian collective of industrial designers and engineers called Cobalt Design.

Q: WHY IS WEARING A HELMET SO IMPORTANT?

A: In some countries, such as Australia & New Zealand wearing a cycling helmet is a legal requirement. Wearing a bike helmet is a crucial accessory for your safety while cycling, scooting or skateboarding. It helps protect your head in case of accidents and reduces the risk of severe head injuries.

Q: DOES THE HELMET COME WITH A WARRANTY?

A:Yes, our helmets come with a 12 months warranty from the date of purchase. We will cover defective locks, adjustment dials, buckles and other hardware. We won't cover regular wear and tear or damage caused by improper use of accidents. If you believe you have purchased a faulty helmet, please email hello@headlokt.com with your proof of receipt / order number, date of purchase and details of the fault. If we can't resolve the problem, we will arrange for a replacement product to be sent to you. Please refer to our terms and conditions for more information on returns of helmets.

Q: SHOULD I REPLACE MY HELMET IF I UNFORTUNATELY HAVE A CRASH?

A: Yes, after a crash or any impact, it's recommended to replace your helmet even if there are no visible signs of damage. Helmets are designed to absorb impact and may not provide the same level of protection after a significant impact.
